Amy Rusch wins 2026 Materiality Prize

Suburbia Contemporary is pleased to announce that Amy Rusch has been awarded the 2026 Materiality Prize at Investec Cape Town Art Fair, presented in partnership with Homo Faber, in the inaugural year of the award.

The prize recognises an exhibiting artist whose practice demonstrates innovative approaches to materiality, reimagined techniques and a strong commitment to contemporary artisanship. Rusch’s work, grounded in a critical engagement with environmental discourse, reflects the rigour, experimentation and material intelligence that define this distinction.

As part of the award, Rusch will participate in the Homo Faber Fellowship Masterclass in Venice, Italy. The Fellowship is an eight-month international craft training programme pairing master artisans with emerging talents, fostering intergenerational exchange and sustaining exceptional craft traditions.

Homo Faber, an initiative of the Michelangelo Foundation, is a cultural movement dedicated to contemporary craftsmanship. Its core programmes include educational initiatives for the next generation, an international biennial and a curated online guide to excellence in craft.

This recognition affirms the relevance of Rusch’s research-driven practice and its contribution to current debates on material culture and environmental responsibility.
